The Internship

June 14, 2017: It was the first day of my internship in Manila Polo Club. I woke up early which I rarely do, then fixed myself fast not to be late on my first day. I got nervous because I don't know anybody working from that place, like I don't know what tasks would they let me do!

My duty would start at 8am and ends by 6pm, so it's NAKAKAPAGOD! Seriously, I'm coming from north to south plus putting myself out of traffic by waking up early. Then by the time uwian na, I would rush to the MRT Ayala Station then battle with long line of passengers until I get on board. But as I look back, I find it pretty worth it. I've learned a lot of things from my experience while I'm interning and these are the few:

1.) Learn to commute.
Its been a battlecry for me to commute because I am not familiar with Makati. And so I tried different modes of transportation to get to my destination.

  • Uber or Grab - expensive yet the best choice if you just want to relax while on board.
  • Jeep - cheap cost, cheap experience but super convenient during mornings! Fast (if no traffic), low cost, and no sweaty seatmates.
  • Train (LRT Line 2 & MRT) - the most practical and convenient because of its route. Blessing for people who travels from north to south!

2.) Be practical.
I am required by the club to wear semi-formal outfits. And so, I find ways to fund my closet with pieces that I can wear and wear and wear. Here are my tips:

  • Find classic pieces. These pieces will be your jem for the rest of your internship life. Find formal clothes like quality blouse, shirt, trousers, etc. that you can use for your thesis defense, presentations, events, and future job interview!
  • Avoid printed clothes. To trick your officemates eye for your outfits, you gotta find pieces that are hard for them to say "kakasuot mo lang nyan kahapon o ng isang araw". Go for clothing that doesn't have much pattern and with play safe colors.
  • Go for ukay. If formal clothes isn't your style, why not spend your money without getting broke!

3.) Respect.
I've always look up to big names like Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, Victoria Beckham, and many more. They became my standard for success but to work with people in reality with higher position(managers and supervisors) compared to myself (intern), I realised that they deserve respect for their success in their own careers.

4.) Work with people.
To be honest, it was a challenge. The whole experience made me much more reserve because I don't really know the people I am working with. It was difficult to get to know each individual because we don't hang out and the only time I can get to know them is all in professional world (except for lunch break). But in work, to get along and finish a quality job, values.

5.) Everybody is equal.
I know from the start the I'll be able to meet upper class people that I won't ever get the chance to bump into tiangge or any public places. But the most important thing to take away is to treat people equally. Every person deserves respect regardless of their status.

6.) Make friends.
I don't say that you should make friends within the period of your internship. No. The thing is, find people whom you can get along with more than just the professional world. Cherish people who shares the same vision and love for their passion and not just by career status.
